It wouldn't have happened under my care. That's all I have to say.

still supports reparative therapy for trans kids. Such therapy is now illegal in California, but the APA appointed a man who built his entire career on trans reparative therapy to head the committee on "gender identity disorders" for DSM-V. The trans community protested his appointment vigorously for years, but we were ignored.

This is not in some distant past. Kenneth Zucker is still practicing today. DSM-V is out today (though NIMH has renounced it as worthless for scientific research).

Transgender people do not need the abusive "care" of quacks and pseudoscientists. We need human rights.

I don't believe in the DSM, though I'm forced to use it as an administrative convenience. And I agree that psychiatry is dominated by pseudoscience.

There's probably plenty we don't agree on. But I treat my patients as individuals, with problems and life stories rather than diagnoses. I have my own life story as well. My label isn't who I am, nor are you any label you might carry. You can deny me consideration, but that doesn't mean I don't merit it. You're entitled to that as well. It's a human right, as I understand it.

        •  Deny you consideration??? (0+ / 0-)

I'm a psychiatric survivor. Most trans people are. My entire life has been shaped, diminished, crushed, nearly ended more than once, by the ethical and intellectual vacuity of psychiatry and psychology goons.

But you guys are so hurt by our lack of "consideration" for you. All those mean, mean trans activists saying terrible things about you...

Take us out of your damn bible, and police the criminals out of your ranks. Until you do that, you don't deserve and won't get our respect.

Obviously, psychiatry is a big, bad thing for you. Contrary to what you think, not all psychiatrists are evil and deserving of no respect. You had some horrible experiences, but blaming someone who was not there is borderline behavior. I respect Candid Psychiatrist immensely for doing you a huge favor and keeping the kid gloves on. Stick to the subject.

            •  Trans activists are regularly marginalized (0+ / 0-)

by this sort of "argument" from people with cis privilege. It's the exact same tactic used to marginalize domestic violence victims who seek legal redress.

The goal of getting trans "diagnoses" out of DSM, and of getting the criminal reparatists out of control in American psychiatry, is a political goal, even a progressive political goal -- not that that would endear it to many on DKos. I don't intend to stop pursuing it here.

              •  For most of my life, (0+ / 0-)

I was denied the right to exist by shrinks. Cis people cannot even imagine what that is like.

Unlike gays, who at least had a subculture in which they could find social support, trans people were directed to abusive, often predatory, shrinks. The M.D. psychiatrist I saw in the 1970s to get hormones wanted me to turn him on sexually in order to prove I was a woman. "I can tell who is really a woman by whether she turns me on" was his proud, open motto.

                That is psychiatry.

                •  No, it is not. (0+ / 0-)

It may be what psychiatry is inside your head, but it is not what psychiatry is outside. Do you drive everyone in your life away, or just those with whom you disagree? But I repeat myself.

The subject is a cartoon about guns and the hypnotic, little voices that come from them. Stop with the persecution of psychiatry already. I'm sure there is a forum for that, too.
