  •  Autism and OCD often are in the same package. (10+ / 0-)

One of the families in our local ASD support group (ASD = Autism Spectrum Disorder, for non-Spectrum readers) has a now-adult son who was just a walking advertisement for anxiety and OCD.  He is definitely on the Spectrum and had lots of help getting through school, but as he entered adulthood, he wanted to go to college and somehow he was made aware that his OCD and anxiety compulsions were holding him back.

Long story short: He made the choice to see a doctor and now he takes medication for his anxiety.  His OCD diminished to an almost negligible amount.  He is doing FANTASTIC now.  He can take the bus and sit next to others.  He can enter a strange room.  He can TALK to people he doesn't know!  He is the person we could all see in there and now everyone else gets to meet him, too.

Medicine isn't the answer to the problem, but for some it can be a big help.  For some.

for your supportive remarks and encouragement.

I'm not happy that so many others are suffering from similar problems, but it is good to know that support and treatment might be of help someday.

it isn't often I get to talk to anyone about these things, beside family that already is sick and tired of it. And I don't worry about anyone blaming me for anything. My philosophy is that I can't be hurt any more than I already am, so if they want to blame me, if it lessens their feelings of guilt or whatever, so be it. At least they can feel better. I have had to deal with far worse. But it is such a waste of a talented person, to let them descend into ???.

Thanks again, and email me if you ever want to chat.

Stay strong. You never know when you will be needed more than you ever imagined.
