  •  US "destabilizing" Ukraine (10+ / 0-)

I just watched a video of President Viktor Yanukovych's security force snipers gunning down unarmed protesters on the Maidan.

Yanukovych and his inner circle have looted $billions from the Ukraine, while torturing and imprisoning political opponents.

So the US is on the wrong side here and should be standing with Putin?

We only know there's a conflict going on between pro-western and pro-Russian factions, and there's a long history of such conflict in Ukraine. During World War II. this manifested itself in the UPA, or Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which fought a guerilla campaign against the Soviets.

There are really two Ukraines: one consisting of lands traditionally Russian, including Kiev, which was once the capital of Kievan Rus; and another on lands formerly belonging to the Kingdom of Poland, Austria-Hungary, and the interwar Polish Republic. The people in these places, the heartland of the UPA insurgency, have always tended to look west.

"Ukraine' ("Украина") is actually Russian for "at the edge"; it describes what was long a frontier region where the ambitions and powers of Russia, Poland, and the Ottoman Empire competed. It has been a place of conflict for centuries. The idea of Ukraine as a nation is fairly recent, first manifesting itself only in the wake of the 1917 Russian revolution.
