they were best as a warmup for the summer games which used to be in the same year. As a stand alone event they are kinda lame. Oh there goes Lars in the biathlon! I had a cousin see that on TV and he had a WTF moment...wait till you see curling I told him. If curling is on why isn't bowling in the summer games.Shit.

But the technology, the video, the access to different events are all clunkier.  I hope the next Summer Games have more in common online with the last than with this Return to 1994.

    •  Why are biathlon or curling any more WTF (0+ / 0-)

than the summer olympics' target shooting and archery events? Both of those winter events require better physical conditioning than those summer events. And if biathlon seems seriously odd, well ... do some research on the Finnish Sissi light infantry.

      •  I know where biathlon comes from (0+ / 0-)

and that doesn't make it less odd. Sorry. Why not add falconry or dog training to the Olympics? The games have gotten ridiculous. Maybe they have outlived their purpose, whatever it once was. How about bass fishing? Yeah. enough already. Ping Pong? Badminton? At least they got rid of the hop, skip and jump. But wrestling and baseball ( which I admit is the most boring of all the options above ), real actual sports, they gotta go.....but we have sailing and horse jumping. Well now we can focus on the World Cup, where games are decided by crooked referees who decide to ignore clear goals, award dubious penalties, and allow offside goals to stand just to assure that Brazil and Spain will go as far as possible in the tournament.

but curling and "military patrol" -- direct antecedent of the biathlon -- were both events in the first (1924) Winter Olympics.

Similarly, shooting was part of the 1896 summer games, and yachting ("sailing") was scheduled but was canceled due to bad weather. The first horse jumping events were held in the 1900 summer games, which also incorporated croquet (first ever olympic women's competition).
