      Also very cool Shot Spotter
(site may be sensitive to your browser settings so I pulled some info)

ShotSpotter detection system documents 39,000 shooting incidents in the District

Without ShotSpotter alerts, 96 percent of gunfire incidents in Hartford would have gone unreported, therefore meaning no police response. ... “Is it money well spent?  I think it is,” he said. “It does concern me, but not to a point where I’m going to pull the plug.”

Even Cisco has one, meaning it's here to stay

In the early 1990s ... the origins of the technology in Menlo Park and Stanford, thank you Dr Lahr

      •  Holy cannoli! Gunshot locators, clever technology. (2+ / 0-)

Sounds like they're still working out some kinks, but it has great potential, and already has detected a lot:

A gunfire detection system has captured about 39,000 gunshots in D.C. since 2006... [That's about 5,000/year, in a city with strict laws against shooting.] The gunfire logged by ShotSpotter overshadows the number of officially reported felony gun crimes by more than 2 to 1... The network covers only a third of the city, focusing on the police districts with the most violent crime.
Now noises recorded by ShotSpotter [in Hartford, CT] are sent directly to company analysts in California who discern whether it’s really gunfire and if so, send an alert to dispatchers back in Connecticut within 60 seconds.
        •  It's an important system (2+ / 0-)

and since it is measuring actual criminal use of a gun approximately 2x the rate of reported felonies, it means that the real rate of criminal misuse of a gun is several times larger than the number of reported gun crimes.

IOW, that suggest that most victims of gun crimes are not reporting the crimes, for a variety of reasons.

I'd love to know more about it.
