Neither WV nor NC are solid red, even today.  WV has a Democratic Governor and 2 Democratic Senators, NC has a Democratic Senator.

being a Blue Dog Democrat from being red.  Nick Rahall is the only surviving 2010 Blue Dog Democrat and he is my congressman.

The problem is, the Democrats and Republicans are in some sort of race to sell out to the coal companies here.  I think a lot of people have found heart in Jay Rockefeller and are starting to question Joe Manchin as their Senator.  It is tough to say, but no one here will stand up to coal except Rockefeller, and he is only doing it because he is retiring in 2014.

a Blue Dog until this year.  However, there is no question that WV Democrats view some issues very differently from the national party.

Rahall was born in Beckley, and probably went to high school with my Dad and aunt.  At the time, basically no coal was mined west of the Mississippi, and Beckley was "Smokeless Coal Capital of the World."

Strong on many issues that I agree with.  Just not seeing the end of coal in the rear-view mirror.

in 2013, for instance.  He voted for ACA and against repeal.  He voted for the incandescent light bulb ban.  A few weeks before the 2010 election he publicly stated that climate change is real and that denying it is "burying your head in the sand."

            •  That practically makes him a flaming radical in a (0+ / 0-)

coal state.  He sounds like the kind of Blue DOg worth supporting, even if he's not progressive on all issues.
