    Christian symbolism.  The Church has a history of absorbing pagan rituals and holidays.  The host is much less substantial than a cracker though, like something shaved off of a craker, and it has been blessed by the Church.  There's some weird idea about "transubstantiation" where the priest magics the wafer into the actual "body" of Christ, who told the apostles at the last supper "this is my blood you drink, this is my body you eat."  So, yeah, you're kind of pretending to eat Jesus, in a cosmic kind of way.
