  •  The religious right gets used and is blind to it (3+ / 0-)

The main reason that the evangelical right has been successful in gathering strength and becoming a force in electoral politics is not because of an inherent appeal, but because of the funds provided by the special interests that invest in winding them up and setting them loose in the direction of conservative candidates.

The messages from the Baptist right wing pulpits have been getting more and more strikingly like framing from the think tanks funded by right wing billionaires.

Jesus was not anti-regulatory or anti-union, but his message has become incredibly oil soaked.

Most likely the zealotry that requires people to check their brains at the door and harp on absurdities like teaching creationism in schools will fade a bit.

But the special interest money is most likely going to be shockingly huge and it will have a presence out there, and the evangelicals will continue to get used.  It will be a force to reckon with for the rest of our lives.

Most Democrats have been in denial about this for decades and articles like this, while reflecting a sensible analysis, tend to reinforce the tendency we seem to have to seek reasons to be complacent about this trend.

Having grown up in Texas, and watched this whole development in politics since the late 1960s, I feel like we can't let ourselves off the hook for the work that needs to be done to mobilize progressivism strategically and intelligently.

If future conditions create a situation like the banking crisis of 2008, and given the state of the world the likelihood is there, the religious right could benefit hugely when millions are in pain.  We could see a Tea Party president if the situation was just right, and God forbid.

We can't ignore the threat that these people represent.

hope that the idiots who have no constructive and creative solutions but only look to tear down will not win the day.
