student watched the segment in disbelief. Wondered who Napolitano was and was he was so ignorant.

    •  Waaay back a couple of decades ago I was an (17+ / 0-)

AP American History student myself.  The teacher came in one day and asked all of us what we thought caused the Civil War.  What REALLY caused it.

We tried to be clever, of course, and show him how smart we were.  We came up with a lot of ideas: "State's Rights."  "The agrarian Southern economy vs. the industrial North."  "The geography of the regions that made industry in the North possible."  "Climate."  "Puritanism vs. Anglicanism."

Man, did we ever come up with some smarty-pants ideas!  Oddly, no one simply said, "Slavery."  I think it seemed too obvious and we were trying to impress the teacher and show how superior we were to such average thinking.

The teacher let us wander through this territory for a bit and as we began to run out of ideas, he finally stopped us.  He went to the board and in large, clear letters, he wrote one word:

      Then he yelled at us!

Basically he told us that NONE of our other ideas would have been enough to start a war.  All of those other things were "excuses" according to him, and sad ones at that.  He glared at us and told us firmly that we should never forget that slavery was THE cause of the Civil War and anyone who said differently was WRONG.  Period.  End of story.

Justifications and excuses were not causes. Without slavery none of those other things would have mattered or even have been tenable.

It was an impressive lesson, one that I took to heart and have vividly remembered for 35 years now.

Good luck to your student!  AP classes really do an excellent job of teaching critical thinking skills.

Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year.

A major cause of the Civil War was that 19th-century agricultural processes could not support the growing of cotton on the same land for more than about 25 years. Prime cotton territory had moved from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf States and was moving to east Texas. The South simply needed more fertile land in which slavery was legal, and needed to have slavery preserved where it was legal--particularly west of the Appalachians.
