  •  Why think about it less obesity (8+ / 0-)

less cost to society over the long run.  A life time of less medical bills and if this trend increases all the numbers about the cost of Obamacare will have to be reworked down.
Less people eating so much food lowers food demand and costs, airline tickets go down, mpg of fuel used for cars goes down.  I am not going to even try and calculate the savings.

    •  Great point, TCU. thanks :) (4+ / 0-)

      I ♥ President Barack Obama.

    •  Let's try to Quantify the Savings (2+ / 0-)

100B annually associated w/ obesity-related healthcare expenses + lost productivity.

Kids 0-5 account for about 6% of these costs (kids 0-5 comprise about 20M Americans / 315M total Americans.  So, kids 0-5 account for 6B in obesity-related healthcare expenses + lost productivity (mom/dad staying home b/c of kid's obesity-related illness)

The First Lady has managed to decrease obesity in this demo by 43%, so 0.43 * 6B, or 2.58B.

So, First Lady managed to save the US 2.58B in year 1.

Assuming it continues to grow at least at 5% per year, by year 10 we'll have annual savings of 4.00B.

Savings of at least 30B over the next decade.

      And that's a lowball figure.

      Great point, Things Come Undone.

but I don't think the cost relationship is linear with the age.

Regardless - healthy habits established early on can't hurt.

The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government. - Thomas Jefferson
