  •  Complicates training of physicians. (13+ / 0-)

As medical school faculty, on the one hand, we teach med students and residents the medical literature showing gun ownership puts their patients, including children, at increased risk of injury or death. But on the other hand, we have to warn them that they need to be familiar with the laws of the state where they practice. They are taught to ask parents about car seat and seatbelt use, smoking around their children, sunscreen use, accessibility of swimming pools, and to recommend the obvious common-sense safety precautions. But the most immediately lethal risk factor of all, access to a loaded gun, may be off limits for discussion.

Wonder how it feels to lose a child patient to a gun accident after not being allowed to discuss safety with parents. And then to have local authorities dismiss it as "Yeah, sad, stuff happens."
