  •  I think it's the reverse. Economic conservatives (6+ / 0-)

... can overlook the excesses of the social conservatives. They need the votes, each election more than ever before for the GOP base is diminishing.

The Republicans I know - a small sample, to be sure, but of long standing ... good Christians and regular church goers, all! - have no problem whatever ignoring the state and Federal GOP social extremists' platform and strategies.

In the developing years of the 80's and early 90's, the Religious Right explicitly directed its foot soldiers not to raise their issues too close to elections. It was not until "Values" night - the first night of the 1992 GOP convention in Houston that Bush I gave over to Sununu - that those folks became nationally public.

    And lost.

2014 is HERE. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!

....because they know that the economic conservatives can do whatever they want - the economic conservatives can use the IOKIYAR for their own people who use drugs/have affairs/are gay/have abortions/etc.

You can't spell "Dianne Feinstein" without "NSA".

Not having Planned Parenthood nearby or if there's no properly licensed abortion provider within 100 miles means almost nothing at all - no added health risk and maybe only a bit more cost - to someone with the proper resources and connections.

Social conservatives, too, can buy around their own theological hobgoblins ... if need be.
