because the end result of the split you describe will simply be for all of the big money interests to start buying up Democrats instead.  You'll then see progressive candidates primaried by DINOs with gigantic wads of mysteriously-appearing cash, and the end result will be the same- corporate-friendly politicians, except now they have Ds next to their names instead of Rs.

If they can't beat us as Republicans, they'll just dress everyone up in sheep's clothing and continue their business as usual.

"Centrist" Dems are former Republicans, and have been for decades. (Think Arlen Specter as the latest in a still growing line of prominent party switchers.) Third Way Dems, for the most part = the "Liberal Republicans" of the 1970s in ideals.

If the GOP ever really becomes an unelectable regional southern party, then the big money will purchase the Democrat party.  It will be a socially moderate and economically conservative party.  It will be the party of low taxes and legal abortions.  The party of free trade and legal immigration.  The party of legal gay marriage and fossil fuel drilling.  It will be run by the Hillary Clintons, Chris Christies, Andrew Cuomos, and yes, the Mitt Romneys of the world.  They won't have to hide for their right and left-wing bases.

And, it will have the support of 65% of the nation and will be unstoppable.  Only socialist liberals and Christian fundamentalists will oppose it, and they can NEVER combine to be an effective electoral opposition.  That might be 35% of the country.  Maybe.  And, they'll have no money, so it won't really matter.

Heck, I don't even like the Dems we have now, for the most part.
