    know that your mother had had inpatient treatment?  

    The implication of Roger's death seems to involve his part in coming up with phrases used to describe mental illness.  It would be many people's guess that the two are not particularly related.  Some people smoke heavily but live into their 80s and 90s; others make a point to eat healthy food but die young.  

    If the gathering knew of your mother's treatment, perhaps the case can be made for their insensitive pick of topics.  But the same kind of talk might have been something she would overhear at the grocery store as well -- from perfect strangers.  

    The diarist took objection to the adjective 'crazy.'  In my opinion, the call for retraction and apology is misplaced.
