I believe countries must protect themselves against unfair competition and undermining their security. If foreign imports are priced lower because they don't include the cost of the domestic labor and environment protections, then they should have those costs added in tarriffs and quotas at the border. Then the exporters can decide whether their prices pay to protect labor and environment in the exporter's country, or in the country protecting itself.

I'm for protecting human, worker, environmental rights and assuring fair taxes are paid on wealth world-wide.  The problem with these "free trade" proposals are that they create a rush to the bottom and also don't incentivize local production and promote wasteful and environmentally harmful long distance shipping of products.  Policy should favor local production but free access, globally, to information.

Protection of rights and a carbon tax will allow a more globally fair economy.  Which these agreements do not do.  Just the opposite.

There's not going to be a global-only agreement to protect labor or the environment that has a standard anywhere near what US labor and environmentalists have gained after a century and a half of sacrifice and struggle. Even though what we've got is woefully inadequate.

Such a global agreement is possible only by force by protectionist countries leveraging their markets and other persuasion on their insistence that any imports (or exports, for that matter) meet those standards. Even that path might not be possible, but the alternative is certainly not.

        You're either a protectionist or you're a victim.
