any person should be denied a marriage license if they are unable to reproduce. Get your balls blown off in Afghanistan? Better call off the tux rental. Get a hysterectomy for uterine cancer in your 20s? Welcome to spinsterhood. Have your first husband die then want to get married again but you're past menopause? Forget it, sister.

Or maybe it'll be a "family" version of the Miranda rights -- if you cannot have children, the Church will assign them to you.

I married Mr. Scribe because I loved him (sometimes I wonder why, but that's a subject of another whole diary). We got married in the Episcopal Church; I much prefer their approach to the matter:

The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is God's will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord.
    (emphasis mine)

Not everyone has baby fever. Sometimes it's financial reasons that prevent one from having children -- you don't want to have them till you can provide for them with a minimum of outside help. Other times it's medical -- maybe you've been left infertile through accident or illness, or pregnancy would be medically risky, or you or your partner have a family history of genetic mishaps you don't want to pass on to possible offspring. Sometimes it's psychological -- maybe you had such a fucked-up childhood you don't want to risk repeating the mistakes your parents made. Whatever the reason, there's no reason why a person should be deprived of either sex (mutual joy) or that help and comfort in adversity.

Hey, Bill -- if marriage is about procreation and not love, then the Church should be encouraging men to dump their wives as soon as they can no longer have babies so they can be replaced with a younger, more fertile model. That's the "logical" solution to your proclamation.

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut
