Russian ambitions for the Crimea and its warm water ports go back to almost the time Russia became Russia and before Ukraine became Ukraine.

The longest established link goes back to the Crimean Khanate from 1441 to 1783 when the Khanate was annexed by Russia. It covered virtually all of the Crimea peninsular apart from an area of the east coast which was part of the Ottoman Empire and extended all along the south coast into what are now parts of Moldova and Russia (there is still a border dispute with Moldova which the Accession Agreement with the EU sought to establish a procedure to settle).

"Come to Sochi, visit the gay clubs and play with the bears" - NOT a Russian advertising slogan.

The Mongols, from which the different Khanates emerged, conquered the region in the 13th century- over 200 years before your earliest date.

The different principalities, which became what we know as Russia, were in an almost constant struggle for independence from those in control of the steppes. Slave raids accounted for an estimated 2 million slaves being captured over the course of a few centuries.

It isn't any wonder why the rulers of what is now Russia sought to put an end to that (even if they held their own people as serfs until the mid 19th century).

The struggle between the rulers of the steppes (the Mongol and Turkic khanates) and the early Russian states is a major part of the founding of Russia.

Obviously times have changed, peoples have moved (or been forced to move- Stalin's mass migrations and murder comes to mind), but the tie between Russia and this area of the Ukraine needs to be explained.

Lastly- none of this makes any of what is happening or has happened right or justified. Just a historical account of the tie between them.
