  •  Good for you (6+ / 0-)

As a long-time criminal defense lawyer I get really steamed when I hear people discuss all their reasons why they shouldn't have to serve on a jury.  It really is the last chance some have to force the State to act honestly.  Most cases settle long before they would see a jury, if you have on that goes actually to trial there are likely to be real issues that need to be looked at.

I was the last juror kicked from a federal jury in the summer of '12, I was kind of looking forward to doing my part.

You did a very lucid job of describing the experience.

    •  I was raised with certain civic values: (6+ / 0-)

You vote in every election, and it is your duty to be informed. If you are called to jury duty, you serve, and you tell the truth in voir dire. You lobby your representatives in government when you think they are right or wrong, one letter will suffice. You read the newspaper every day. You keep informed and keep a steady head, use your intellect. You learn as much about how government works as you can. You pay your taxes, and don't try to cheat. You go to Town Meeting, and vote locally if you have that kind of town government (we did). If you have time, get involved.

      Most of all, be fair.

THAT was how I was raised, and my family walked the walk.

    •  To illustrate. I was 7 years old in 1976. (6+ / 0-)

My dad always told us bedtime stories (which he made up himself and they were GOOD--ask bastrop) and he came back from voting after his long commute on the train. He was still in his business suit and looked tired. I asked him "Did you vote for President Ford or for Governor Carter?" You know what he told me?

      "It's none of your business".

Then, he told me WHY it was none of my seven year old business, or my mother's business, or my grandmother's business, or anyone's business. He gave us a civics lesson as a bedtime story that night. I will never forget it.

At seven years old, my Daddy made it clear that a woman's or a man's vote was only their own business.

He voted for Carter, I later found out.

I figured the process would be more interesting than the trial itself. Hollywood does a real disservice to the trial system.

The whole case in the mind of the defense rested on the crime lab issues. I could have seen some people finding reasonable doubt on the top charge because of that, but the guy was guilty and either a liar,  misremembered a lot of things that he claimed were etched into his mind forever or both.
