He's expired?  Sheise!  Tell him to get his ass to the closest "friendly" consulate/embassy.  I don't care if it's Ecuador!  He needs to come in from the cold now.  No status makes him fair game along with all of his friends and family.  How far of a stretch is it for something like "he was "teaching English" but is a pro-Western agitator/spy".  No status makes you very easy to disappear.  He needs to start thinking with his head, not his heart.

    •  Yeah, I'd have to agree here. (4+ / 0-)

He's treading on thin ice, though I don't think the situation is dire (yet).

There is a travel warning for Ukraine, and the U.S. gov't has authorized family members of embassy staff to leave the country.  That's pretty serious.

If I were your son, I'd get to Kyiv and try and get a plane out this week. He should keep in contact with the Embassy (there don't seem to be any U.S. consular offices in Ukraine outside Kyiv). He should probably be honest with consular staff about his visa situation.  They can probably help shepherd him out of the country.

Good luck to your stepson and his gf!
