  •  That's hilarious. (8+ / 0-)

I didn't realize my "stereo" was a "media center" until my 12 year old nephew called it that.

I can see Canada from my house. No, really, I can.

      You know... stereo speakers?

      I couldn't find them.

No kidding. I went to the Best Buy and had the experience I related above. "Where does it plug into your television" was their first question. "Subwoofers" were their answer. I tried to explain to them that "media center" speakers were crummy and meant to vibrate and wobble but not reproduce, say, a concert room, and they stared at me and pointed me toward the reproduction sports car with car speakers in it for a demo.

The really hard core audiophile things exist still. If one wants to spend a month's rent per speaker, one can get a truly wondrous speaker, but the old category of "hi fi" has vanished.

Music was meant to be heard on a .75" neodymium speaker, wasn't it?

players for my system.  Had 2 identical high end Harmon Karden CD units, both were replaced under warranty for an obvious design flaw and both died again just after the warranty expired. Think there was any offer of redress?

I also blew through 3 DVD players in 3 years, the last one being Costco's cheapest model simply because assumed it was disposable. It was.

This diary has really hit a nerve. i think the German model is the way to go. Give the manufacturers a painful incentive to make products that last.

an entire technology become obsolete. VHS and Betamax were my first experience with this, now CD/DVD are on the way out.
