the Federal Government. It has a bi-cameral legislature (House of Bishops, House of Deputies--which is made up of lay folk and priests), it has courts, it has a constitution, it has something like a "bill of rights". It is a much more democratic institution than you realize. What it is NOT, is congregational in polity. It is, basically, a republic rather than a democracy.

Actually, even the smallest Episcopal parishes have high standards for choral singing. ;)

... is that they be willing.

Fortunately, those who respond to the semi-annual call are keenly aware of their limitations.

About a year ago, our first soprano passed away.  I have a wide enough range that I sing where I'm asked, which was often with the altos (less often with the tenors) in order to strengthen the harmonic line.

This past Christmas Eve our director wanted to do the Darke version of "In the bleak mid-winter," the first verse of which is normally a soprano solo and the last verse of which has a note that is generally considered in the range of a first soprano.

I was the only person who could hit that note now that Elaine was gone, but I don't normally sing solos, so it prompted me to take a preparatory voice lesson from the director of my community chorus.  I'm so glad I did.  :-)

Because of the weather, our rehearsal time was severely limited, but everyone practiced with YouTube, and we absolutely nailed it at the Christmas Eve service.

Sorry for the off-topic tangent, but I'm kinda proud of our little group.
