...by Ukraine and Russia if the US wants to keep the current Ukraine regime in power and avoid disrupting Syria and Iran negotiations.

Gaffes are sometimes useful for domestic audiences.  Kerry's last gaffe moved us away from a war.  Had he not said it, the public would not have panicked and pushed back on Congress.

This is a distraction from making a huge historical agreement with Iran and unwinding the deteriorating situation in Syria.   Those are more important to Kerry than counting coup on Putin.  But neo-cons really want to bottle up the Soviet Union Russia from the Black Sea.  They have put so much stock in conventional geopolitical explanations about what Putin wants.

The scary part for the US is the power of the neo-Nazi nationalists in the new Ukrainian regime.

Sorry, Occam's razor cuts a bit deeper than that.

Dogs from the street can have all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as if they are grateful for this kindness. -- H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej

more like muddling through if we're lucky.  The US leadership just needs to know when to stop talking like neo-con Republicans and do a deal.  That happened with Syria after the American people stared into the abyss with Kerry's gaffe in threatening war on Syria.  The public mood has been whipped up more into a war fever this time.

I was just saying that until Kerry talks privately with the Ukrainians, he won't know how locked into hostilities the Nuland crowd has put us.  Because Putin is not going to give up Sevastapol as a base and he will only back off from the ethnic Russian oblasts in Ukraine if there are proper minority rights guarantees.

So Kerry's job is to find out how locked into power the neo-nazi Svoboda and Right Sector parties are.

        •  well, trust me, (0+ / 0-)

the american public is way less enthused with a slug fest
with the russians then even Syria.

The American's know the Russians are no push over.
We can steamroller the arabs, but, the russians, they took on Hitler, for 5 years alone.

    •  who cares if the russians are on the Black sea? (0+ / 0-)

      1) They've been there since the time of the tsars.

      2) It's a sea, the rights are driven by coast line, not presence.

      3) It's a bathtub.  The straits of hercules are a death trap to any unwanted crossing.

aside from it lets the Russians lean on Georgia a bit and
      trade to Turkey, who cares?
