    That's exactly what Obama did.  Obama didn't try to play the role of 2008 Presidential candidate in 2005 or 2006.  I think he was sincere in thinking at that time that it was too soon.  I think only after the 2006 midterm did he see an opening for 2008 and changed his mind, but even then he didn't do anything flashy in the lead-up.  He just started a Presidential campaign and started running.

    Rubio would've done well to just be the best Senator he could be his first few years, then decide to run or not run for President based on that.

    On immigration, he shouldn't have taken a lead on the issue with the Presidency in mind, but only on his personal interest in the issue and on the merits.  Once he took a lead role and supported the Senate bill, he should've stuck with it through the storm.  Maybe it would've sunk him, maybe not.  But trying to have it both ways was deeply self-damaging.

    He's just not ready for prime time and never really was.
