  •  I remember the march to war in Iraq (15+ / 0-)

The pundits and politicians hawking US intervention in  Iraq following 9/11 painted the situation in terms of
    rose colored Western values.

There was a quintessential failure to understand the Iraqi culture by the neo-cons (Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney, et al)

For example, Cheney spoke out publicly the US would be greeted as liberators. Additionally they failed to appreciate the cultural values of  protecting their artifacts and antiquities.

I believe military planners also ignored the differences and historical animosities between sects.  This animosity blossomed into the ongoing Iraqi civil war.

We need to educate ourselves on the nuances and intricacies on the Ukraine situation. The GOP is trying to do what they do best in boiling the situation to a Good vs Evil.  Further, the criticism of President Obama's foreign policy is because Obama is looking through the nuances and sees the complexity in Ukraine.
