  •  The Budapest Memorandum isn't... (17+ / 0-)

a commitment to defend Ukraine.  The US (along with Russia, the UK, and later France and China) agree to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and borders, refrain from using force (especially nuclear) against Ukraine, and if anyone else uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine seek UN Security Council action in response.  It is not a defense agreement.  Russia is in violation of this agreement, we are not.

on this politically-savvy site can get something so important so wrong. Some seem to think that nuclear war is inevitable and required by law since we signed some piece of paper (whatever it says) 20 years ago. Nations don't commit suicide because of legal documents.

    •  To bootleg - Yes but is that what the Ukraine says (0+ / 0-)

If you google it, you'll find the answer because the Ukraine is rather clear about what the memorandum says and what this means for the U.S. The point of the diary is to get the readers thinking and to find the answers for themselves. That's what makes this diary different and requires the reader to take ownership or the diary fails. The truth is out there. It's up to us to find it, or hide from it.

      •  I am stunned that you haven't updated/edited (7+ / 0-)

        your diary.

After the question "are we at war with Russia?" you should update with "Update: No, the memorandum is not a treaty and doesn't say what I thought it said. I apologize."

Your lame excuse that you are just trying to get readers thinking doesn't change being wrong and doesn't remove your obligation to correct. Only the true DKos addicts read deep into the comments, let alone read a whole diary carefully.

"The right is correct on one thing...we really are a bunch of easily outraged nitpickers."

        •  i would think "war with Russia" (0+ / 0-)

is not the sort of topic on which people need to decide for themselves whether or not it is taking place. If you can ask the question, you haven't had your face melted off, therefore the answer is no.

          Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.
