  •  CHEERS to our rescue dog "Honey" (17+ / 0-)

a <1 yr Basenji Mix. She walked out of my open garage while I was painting. She licked my hand. I didn't look at her but she wanted kisses. And her ribs were showing. Someone threw her out of a car. She had a small wound on her flank, not infected. I fed her two bowls of cat food, all our cooked chicken, a piece of American cheese and a blueberry yogurt. I called our local dog lady whom I'd heard needed a dog. Nope, she has four. She brought over a dog food care package and I gave Honey a large can of gushy mixed with crunchies. Finally, finally she felt full.

I gave her an old tablecloth for a blankie. She owned it and shook it to death, then laid down on it. She slept with the blankie on OHD's porch chair overnight, we didn't tie her up. I woke early to go find her, she was right there, and get the bowls to feed her breakfast. I unlocked the deadbolt but forgot the knob lock. The door shut. I was locked out.
I sat on OHD's porch chair and she jumped half into my lap, wrapped her arms around my waist and put her head in my lap. I wrapped my arms around her torso and put my head down on hers. We stayed that way for about 20 minutes.
At last, I knocked on my door and OHD got up and let me in. I fed the girl breakfast. OHD was going to photograph all the county's shelter pets for his adoption newspaper, Pet Gazette of Brevard FL, and so he loaded Honey in the truck and took her to the North Animal Care Center (NACC). They held her as a Lost Dog for 10 days. I followed her progress on their FB page. She was released from NACC and immediately taken into the no-kill SPCA of North Brevard. After a few days, she was adopted  by a furever family.
This took the weight of a cement block off my heart. I know if I ever get to the point where I can care for a dog, it will be one just like Honey, the Basenji mix. What a doggie. I wanted her for my own. I cried every day she was in the county shelter. She turned me into a woozle lover. CHEERS!
(That's OHD's knee and my painting ladder shoes.)
We put this in the paper in case she really was lost. Look at this face and ears:
