Novorossiysk is Russia's largest warm water port on the Black Sea.

If the lease extension on Sevastopol is invalidated and Russia is convinced to leave Crimea, they have other places to move their fleet, such as Novorossiysk, where they are already building a naval base (a couple of years off schedule).

They want more influence around the Black Sea, and Crimea is a way to get it.  Right now, they have a limited Black Sea coast, plus the Sea of Azov.  Especially if they end up expanding the Volga-Don Canal, they'll be able to ship that much more petroleum from the Caspian region, but they will want more control in the Black Sea to do so.  I think the bailwick against Russian expansion in the region will likely come from Turkey and its sphere of influence.
