    crushed, to be honest. I think that's bluster from the Russian press.

    The Local Police certainly wouldn't have come down on the pro-Russian civilians, and the significantly ethnic Russian Ukrainian military wouldn't have cooperated either.

    That being said, I don't think that Crimea has a right to self determination without the Crimean Tatars, all of them, being given a say.

    And they're not going to ask the portion of the population which was forcibly exiled to Uzbekistan what they think of a Russian annexation of Crimea.

    As a peace deal, I would only support Crimean independence if it was coupled with a Tatar right of return.

    And I think that without that component, an independent Crimea is going to see ethnic conflict a la Dagestan/Chechnya.
