To be honest, I don't really care about that. I'm more interested in protecting the Tatars and preventing ethnic conflict. If Putin gets a political win, then he gets a political win.

It's not like he's going to live forever. Old age comes to us all in time. And if he ends up ruling til the ripe old age of 106, then there's really not much we can do about it.

But as far as preventing a humanitarian and diplomatic disaster on ethnic conflict and nuclear proliferation, that's someplace where I think we can do something.

in a situation where he can lose before Putin has any reason to negotiate an outcome in favor of the Tarters.  Otherwise, we might as well just start our petition campaign directly to Putin instead, since he has all the power over the outcome and the US has none.  That's why the power game of geopolitics is so relevant to humanitarian concerns.  Only power matters in the end, because only power can determine moral outcomes, and power has a sustainability logic of its own that limits it and allows for strategic action on the part of activists and statesmen alike.

      •  We have some options. (0+ / 0-)

Now we just have to see if the western world can work together for the good of all.

        You're probably right.
