  •  The outcome of that, (7+ / 0-)

was Obama and Kerry successfully turned Putin's overreach against him, when Putin said Assad hadn't used chemical weapons, the U.S. boxed him into being the guarantor of Assad's disarmament.  I don't know where that goes from here, but the Syria situation refutes both the warmongering narrative from the left and the coward narrative from the right.  Somewhat Cuban missile crisis esque, rather, where the credible threat of force combined with diplomacy let everyone backdown and find ways to save face.  (JFK also got us deeper into a land war in Asia, and RFK had nothing to criticize about it until he ran for President . .. )

For instance, here was Chris Coons today telling AiPAC that Putin was 'emboldened' by not bombing Syria.  Of course, had we done so -- and this the diarists point -- it wouldn't have affected Putin's incentives whatsoever because a military strike against a minor mideast dictator (bad, not Hitler, and nobody ever suggested as much), is categorically distinct from going to battle with a major world power within that other power's historical sphere of influence.

Economic sanctions and diplo isolation is all anyone can or should do.  As for the rest of the foreign policy, I'm not sure that's supported - you have a commitment to nuclear disarmament, for one thing.

    Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

    •  I think I read somewhere (0+ / 0-)

that 15-20% of Assad's chemical weapons have been destroyed. Not enough, but every little bit helps. And he is no longer using them. Otherwise, very difficult.
