  •  USSR gave Crimea to Ukraine in 1954. (4+ / 0-)

Crimea has never been part of Ukraine historically.  Not to mention the Russian (Soviet) fleet has been in and out of there since half a league half a league half a league days.  The Crimean War was about Russia protecting Orthodox Christians from the Ottoman Empire AND trying to secure access to a cold weather port.

Russia finally obtained control of Savastopol in 1944 when they drove the Nazis out.

Speaking of sovereign countries and naval bases . . . GUANTANAMO.

    •  Part of story omitted: Crimea voted in '91 to stay (6+ / 0-)

in Ukraine. After the Soviet Union collapsed, there was a referendum throughout Ukraine so that each region had choices. The current status of Crimea as a semi-autonomous region within Ukraine was decided by democratic vote and follow-up decisions taken by Crimea's own democratically elected Parliament in 1992.

There's info about this on the UN website. Since then, the proportion of Russians in Crimea has decreased.

There is no existence without doubt.
