but there was much diversity in that audience, imo. The looks on those women's faces spoke to how much they could identify with this young woman's words.

successful people and that it is predominantly people who tone skews toward the lighter end of the scale. Also, how many of them are making sure their hair looks more like that of white people than their natural hair? I don't think that's a coincidence. It's an effect of racism.

That said, it is perfectly understandable. Everyone deserves a chance to feel safe and "successful" in their lives and we do what we must.

The key is to then transfer the relative social power you have gained into the further breaking down of barriers. I hope Lupita's speech is seen far and wide.

      •  LOL, this white woman (0+ / 0-)

has never been happy with her "natural hair" and done no end of things to make it different than it wants to be. I don't disagree that in the case of black women, being chained to white hair dos was definitely an effect of racism, big time. Thank heavens the Afro changed that, then the braids and the dreds, and other fashion hits over the years. So as my black pal tells me, "It's great I can go with my natural hair, if I want to, but like you, I just don't want to all that often. It's having a choice that's the final goal"
