as a nation we seem to have forgotten that.

It seems to me people have finally gotten fed up with the federal government and are taking matters into their own hands. Here in Washington State we now have several laws in place that fly in the face of federal law, yet we couldn't pass the GMO law.

Why? because they confused people by saying not everything would be labeled. People voted against it because they wanted everything labeled and the "no" ads confused them into believing there would be unlabeled GMO food on the shelf.

I was recently talking to my former boss who works for a major snack food company. He tells me sales are down. Why?

It was one of the companies that was behind the political ads for no on our initiative. Yet I was down at Bobs Red Mill outlet in the middle of last week in the morning. I thought it would be a slow time of day. It looked about like walmart for the after christmas sale there were so many people. Upon inquiring if it was always like that I was told for about the past two years business has doubled each year.

This is also true of the food co op I manage. We have gone from 1000 sq feet to 5000 sq feet in 4 years and are now looking at adding another location on the other side of town. our membership has grown from 1,500 to 5,750 in that time. Our orders just to keep the store full have tripled and on some things, like soy beans, corn meal, and rice we are now ordering four or five times as much as we did just four years ago.

Voting with our pocketbook will make a difference

The Monsantos of the corporate world are desperate to hang on to their American market because it is the only one they have left. They have invested heavily in it.

So glad to hear this. It is one area of petitioning which is very effective since they rely on people liking their products to stay in business.

Wish our politicians had a similar outlook on petitions. They just complain about hearing from constituents here in Oregon.

I will still stick with my organic butter.

works out to the benefit of consumers. We can and do - or should - vote with our wallets and voice our opinions on manufacturers' websites. Orowheat removed high-fructose corn syrup from their entire product line a few years ago in response to customer feedback.

Of course, "let the market decide" doesn't apply everywhere. In so many cases, the consumer has no choice. Every time I hear a "libertarian" spout "free market principles," I ask how a typical consumer can protect against free marketeers such as these.

Funny how it sometimes backfires on them. Since GMOs have come along I have really started making sure I know where my food is coming from.

I did that squirrel test with the GMO corn they really did avoid it even when the other cob was empty. I trust those instincts. It is also the first time I have ever seen a squirrel turn down corn.
