I'm sure that if the guys writing the Old Testament had ever tasted shrimp Creole or crawfish étouffée, they'd have decided to rethink the injunctions against shellfish.

BTW, I grew up in New Orleans, and most of my parents' friends were Jewish, and pretty much all of them ate shellfish.  Mind you, they were all Reform Jews, but still . . . .

    •  To be fair, the biblical prohibitions on (0+ / 0-)

pork and shellfish were perfectly reasonable.  The only reason to ignore them now is because of things like FDA inspections, using a meat thermometer to make sure it is cooked long enough, and the fact that if you get food poisoning you can just go to the hospital and get some antibiotics which clears it right up.  Back then they didn't even know what germs were, much less have any of that advanced technology we do today.  Let's face it, we are living in an age of miracles (curing plagues like they were nothing, resurrecting the recently dead, and even a handheld device that gives access to pretty much all the knowledge humanity has) but we have gotten so used to it that we don't notice.
