  •  Marriages as full and equal partnerships (0+ / 0-)

seem to work out the best in my observation -- each member of the partnership using their talents to make the marriage work. I've got a good head for finances and such, but Mr. Scribe is way more of the nurturing sort so he can deal with his mom and her issues a lot better, while I get frustrated way too easy.

Ultimately, I think it's this idea of the man being The Boss and the head of the household while the "little woman" defers to him in all things is the reason why marriage equality horrifies many on the Right -- how do you have a leader when you've got two men or two women in a relationship? The lines are blurred in that case.

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut

    •  Frequently the leader depends on the topic (1+ / 0-)

One may take the lead on child raising, the other household repair, etc.., Other topics are a joint decision, such as what to do with vacation time.

This reminds me of an old joke.

Two men who are university professors are talking about, "who wears the pants" in their home.  One man says, "I'm responsible for the big stuff.  I decide how we vote in the UN, what our trade policy should be , should NATO get involved in different parts of the world, should the city pay for a new sports stadium, while my wife decides the less important stuff, where we live, where our kids go to school and their after-school activities, where we go on family vacation, how the house and garden are decorated, and how much we save."

The most important way to protect the environment is not to have more than one child.

    •  That goes more to heteronormativity (0+ / 0-)

than anything else.  Still quite sexist, of course.
