is a good enough reason to fight KXL. I'm just as concerned about habitat destruction as CO2. When greater than 50% of the landmass is altered by human activities, biodiversity tends to collapse.

“Industry does everything they can and gets away with it almost all the time, whether it’s the coal industry, not the subject of this hearing, or water or whatever. They will cut corners, and they will get away with it. " Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D, WVa

      No water, no people.
      No drinkable water, no people.
No water usable in food production, no people.

      No clean water, no civilization.

Sure once I was young and impulsive, I wore every conceivable pin. Even went to socialist meetings, learned all the old union hymns. Ah, but I've grown older and wiser. And that's why I'm turning you in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52Oz-54VYw

    •  there is not a lot of biodiversity (0+ / 0-)

in the Boreal forest . . . it's a pretty sparse environment.  There are probably more species in a couple square miles of Amazon rainforest than in all of Northern Alberta.  Recently glaciated, too cold for rapid invasion and re-colonization.  The water "contamination" is with stuff that for the most part was already there, just a few feet underground (or under ice, depending on the season).  In a few hundred years it will be back under the same ground (minus the "contaminants" that have been extracted).  It's certainly a mess while in process, but so are floods and tornados and a whole lot of other "natural" things.  Climate change is going to have more impact up there than even the biggest and ugliest of the containment ponds.  And climate change will continue unabated whether KXL gets built of not.
