    all other forms of crude do degrade pipeline integrity, and pipelines carrying those other forms of crude oil do leak with some regularity. So discovering that tar sands crude isn't any worse than other crude isn't good news.

    And when tar sands crude does leak, that 'far more difficult to clean up' bit comes into play.

    This is similar to finding that, say, third degree burns on the lower legs don't become infected at a greater rate than third degree burns on the shoulders, and the mortality rate is the same in both cases.

    Actually, it's worse, since it might be possible to avoid third degree burns one's entire life. There hasn't been a pipeline built yet that did not leak during its lifetime. And quite a few pipelines are still in use well after their engineered lifetime.
