which held that horrific levels of premature death and starvation in the third world were just fine with God, as long as Catholic missionaries were there to save their souls as they died.

Probably just coincidence that the Roman Catholic Church got along quite well with all the dictators from Franco on down.

that was not what I was taught.   Perhaps there was diversity in thought.

I don't think Pope Francis would get along with Franco.  Nor would be like Dorothy Day.

You paint with too broad of a brush.

      •  Pope Francis seems to have got along just fine... (0+ / 0-)

with the Generalissimos during Argentina's 'dirty war'. The Catholic Church's historical record regarding right wing authoritarian dictators is generally shameful, starting with "Hitler's Pope" Pius XII. Deference to such leaders dovetailed nicely with the Vatican's demand that the commoners in the pews remain silently obedient to Rome.

The Church's resistance to Communism seemed to reflect the fear that it represented an existential threat to religious primacy rather than any squeamishness over authoritarian political rule. And this unfortunately led John Paul II to crush Latin America's 'liberation theology' movement in favor of the Generalissimos.

I also grew up in the Vatican II era, but from the perspective of 2014 it seems clearer every day that it was a brief hiccup in a long authoritarian story.
