  •  Learning two languages when you're little (6+ / 0-)

is no big deal. Little brains are set up for that. My three-year-old granddaughter knows how to throw temper tantrums in two languages--and switches from "Papa" and "Mama" to "Daddy" and "Mommy" when she does it.

If it's natural in your family, it's natural for your kid. The problem comes with literacy. The parents have to know how to read and write in both languages, too, and teach their children.

In our family, I wasn't specifically wanting the next generation to leave the country. I just wanted to pass along the family heritage of being a citizen of the world, the way I felt as a kid.
