    is that the EIS argument for the pipeline doesn't dispute any of the horrible facts about tar sands. It just says "Well, they're going to be mined and burned anyway, so what the hell." The only way they can justify Transcanada's project is to imagine a political and economic world in which the mining of tar sands can't be stopped.

    In other words, they have to imagine a world without democracy and the rule of law, where profit is the only consideration.

    State's willingness to embrace this ethos--or lack thereof--is almost as disturbing as the prospect of the pollution that will result from the tar sands project.

    Sure once I was young and impulsive, I wore every conceivable pin. Even went to socialist meetings, learned all the old union hymns. Ah, but I've grown older and wiser. And that's why I'm turning you in.
