I'm not sure, but I suspect that a combination of things have lead to his arrest.  Maybe 1 factor on its own wouldnt have warranted charges, but the totality of events, perhaps, did.

If Texas is similar to my state, the youth, under the age of 18, is prohibited from having the weapon in the first place.

Deadly force can only be used when your life or the life of another is under the imminent threat of death or great bodily harm.  (If abuser has a history of domestic violence and never demonstrated great bodily harm, that may be held against defendant.  Why was this time any different)

    Defendant left the scene.

If the mother is not beaten to a pulp or a deadly weapon was found at the scene, this boy may be in deep trouble.

Remember, no matter how much we empathize with the true victims here, it is never a good eye to lower the bar of justifiable homicide.  It's just a bad precedent that you'll be sorry for, later.

(Fwiw, I gave my opinion from the devils advocate perspective.  I suspect the mother was let down somewhere along the way by law enforcement.  I'd suggest this wasn't the first time she was beaten.  Personally, I have no sympathy for the abuser.  But I'm not going to be sitting on that jury, either)

      You're right.

This was written from a very biased, emotional standpoint. I have no sympathy for the deceased. None at all. Period.

By the way, will you marry me? lol (means I'm not really serious!)
