Usually the authorities are worthless when it comes to preventing DV.  They can respond to DV but that doesn't save anyone's life.  When a man repeatedly threatens a woman with death and beats her over and over again, vigilante justic is often the only resort.

... has nothing to do with justice. Pursuing someone in the name of "defense" or self defense, for that matter, is wrong.

I hope reason prevails for the prosecution in this case - at least as we know the facts now - and I don't think it has so far. Still, in a civilized society, everyone is better off with the justice system governing the conduct of individuals, not self-help. Particularly in cases of homicide.

in which I know some of the participants, the police were useless.  In one case the abusive husband smashed a vase on dining table and layed his victim on the glass for further beating.  Her son finally snapped and thrashed his own dad to stop the violence.  That was the act that finally freed her from his power over her.  If her son had been younger or had left home, she would likely have died by her husband's hand.  The worthlessness of the police cannot be over emphasized, they were called several times and did NOTHING.  Their inaction only fuels the perp's anger, and the victim's sense of guilt.

"Violence" may not even be the right word, perhaps "torture" is a better description.  It is the repetition of the beatings, the unrelentless threat of severe bodily harm or death, the constant feeling of shame, guilt, and worthlessness.  If the law is impotent to stop such evil, better a family member exacts justice than the victim continues suffering or dies.
