  •  I don't believe (0+ / 0-)

that full resource depletion can occur without it.  That is the point of 350.org

transport by truck and rail is simply too expensive.

    •  How expensive would a pipeline leak (3+ / 0-)

contaminating a significant portion of the U.S. water supply (in farm country), and who would pay the cost?  Perhaps it would be cheaper to develop new technology.

      •  I agree that there is a price (0+ / 0-)

climate change is even more destructive than the groundwater pollution.  However, the approach of peak oil is very real and there will be no avoiding the extraction and sale of oil

we are simply too dependent on oil still.  That ship sailed when they killed the electric car in 99.

There is no problem transporting syncrude through existing pipeline infrastructure, and it can be refined almost anywhere (unlike bitumen, which can only be handled by refineries like those in Louisiana that were designed for heavy crude).  So If KXL isn't built then upgraders will be (in Alberta) and syncrude will go direct to the world market (ie. China).  Either the existing Western Pipeline will be expanded or a new one will be built to the soon-to-be-ice-free arctic ocean.

That will be better all around for Canada, and for China . . . which pretty much means that it will happen.

Nobody wants KXL built except the US Government (for "political" reasons).
