  •  Isn't that a double-edged sword swung about (8+ / 0-)

here? People are urged to vote in their own best interests or they are 'stupid' and don't 'get it' and then when they do they are selfish Republicans...damned if they do and damned if they don't. Whatever.

    •  Actually, around here, most of what we urge people (0+ / 0-)

to vote for in the name of their own self-interests are things that benefit something like 99% of us.   If you actually pay a bit more attention to just what we urge people to vote for "in their own self- interests", they're not things like this, that divide up one race against another.

So your comment is pretty 'apples to oranges'.

      •  Right but... (0+ / 0-)

Affirmative Action isn't something that benefits 99% of us.  It is specifically designed not to.

        •  I would disagree, with a caveat. (0+ / 0-)

Sure, it's not a direct benefit to everyone, especially those who might 'lose a spot', but it DOES help society as a whole to help bring people out of multi-generational poverty.  It's a boost in the same sort of way that moving money from the pockets of the wealthy into the pockets of the poor isn't a zero-sum game.  The increased spending at the bottom boosts the economy by greater than a 1:1 ratio.

        •  that depends on whether one acknowledges (0+ / 0-)

that everyone benefits from a society where large segments of society are not locked out of engines of upward mobility and elite public institutions, and where the ranks of the state's emerging elite professional, academic, entrepreneurial and artistic classes contain a diversity reflective of the society that pays taxes to support their education.

i still chuckle at the fact that the same whites who championed prop 209 saw their numbers drop at the UCs after it passed.
