face of America, representative in fact. Even in a "progressive" and "highly educated" area the pure crap I overhear at a bar or restaurant or party sometimes just makes me think we've lost our collective minds and intelligence and have the IQ of some slavering mob of zombies.

Kid you not at all. Overheard "executives" of an IT firm in one of the top counties in "education" in the nation in which one was having a bit of trouble with the others. Ireland? Trouibles? Why would there ever be a problem driving from Belfast to Dublin? IRA? What is that?

Rabbits bounding about oblivious to the coyotes and foxes of the world! Whaddya wanna bet they knew ever damn Redskin or Ravens statistic though? Crimea? Cry me what?

This sentence doesn't make any sense. The rest of what you said makes it sound like they were talking about Ireland, but why, or what they were saying, is unclear.

self identified "executives" according to earlier discussion of personnel, objectives and corporate goals with one then going into recent vacation in Ireland. Discussion in county with very high educational level, one of top in nation according to last census. The "vacationer" mentioned driving from Norther Ireland to Ireland, Belfast to Dublin, and how easy it was. Others at table puzzled. Mystified. Why this notable. "Troubles" had made it difficult. "What 'troubles'?" "Thought it one country" and such. Zero clue as to fact there was Ireland a republic and Northern Ireland that was not. Zero historical clue that there had been some sort of "troubles" there. Clueless! How could anyone not know there had been "troubles" in Ireland? IRA? Cars crossing a border with inspections (weapons, bombs, wanted people)? The sun rises in the west, right? China is just past Bermuda (what is Bermuda?) right? New Jersey is on the Pacific Coast isn't it?

Pithed frogs! Wonder if today's conversation might be "Crimea? Cry me a what?" Pithed frogs!

        •  Ah, now I get it (0+ / 0-)

I couldn't understand why they were talking about Ireland, but the detail that one of them had just taken a trip there makes it clear. Thanks.

It is stunning. You would probably be interested to hear of an argument that a friend of mine once got into with his boss. Friend was a plumber, boss was the head of the plumbing company. This is before the "troubles" were completely over, but towards the end. My friend expressed an opinion along the lines of, "Why can't they all get along?"

His boss responded that, since they share an island, England has to keep their thumb on the Irish. My friend was stunned, and tried to explain to his boss that Ireland was a separate island. His boss insisted that was not correct; Scotland was its own island, but Ireland was on the same island with England.

My friend tried to tell him he had it backwards, but to no avail.
