Well both series have lots of space ships, but so much happens on the land with the Cherryh books other than the brief trip into space

and Sector General...I was thinking more of the creatures and the psychology of the stories than the fact they are delivered to the space hospital by ships.

But...I accept your view...I have always been confused by the difference.

    •  you're not alone, 8-) in the uncertainty, that is (4+ / 0-)

A universe that follows what we know as the laws of physics, is an old delineator of the line between fantasy and SF. I'm old, that's what I was imprinted with -- if it's basically scientific (the rockets work because of physics, rather than because of fluffy pink thinking), then it's Science Fiction. Otherwise, it's some grade of fantasy.

Things can get real confusing, like Pern... Flying dragons, right, that's got to be fantasy... until 20 yrs later when they start writing the "how the lost space colony coped with unexpected problems in the local ecosphere..." books! Then, suddenly, lots of stuff has hard-science underpinnings!

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...
