    High-Altitude Tunnels - These are designed to test the effects of shock waves again various aircraft shapes in near vacuum. In 1952 the University of California constructed the first two high-altitude wind tunnels. One for testing objects at 50 to 70 miles above earth and the second one for tests at 80 to 200 miles above earth.[12]

    That's a bit extreme - but surely they must have something in between . ..
