  •  He was one of, if not the best, pediatric (9+ / 0-)

    neurosurgeons in the US.

It's kind of distressing to see someone so bright in one area be so dismal in another. He seems to be under the delusion, as so many RWers seem to be, that because he worked hard and was very successful that anyone who's not as successful just didn't work hard.

People who think like this don't take into account the wide degree of variability in the abilities of Americans as a whole. Not everyone can be a neurosurgeon. And not everyone can be a great nurse or teacher. And society as a whole needs people willing to pick up the garbage, sweep the streets and just prepare food or serve food to others.

In the RW mindset the only jobs that matter are the ones that pay big $$$ and everyone else is unworthy of even the basics.

    •  There was something similar in Nevada. (2+ / 0-)

When I lived there, a member of the Board of Regents was a character named Lonnie Hammergren.  He was reputedly a brilliant neurosurgeon but a total flake.  During a budget crisis in the early 90s he urged the Board to by Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose."  Long story short, he was eventually elected Lieutenant Governor of Nevada as a Republican.  The loony stops here, a Republican motto.
