  •  Some debate is unhealthy, but not all of it. (2+ / 0-)

It depends on whether people are willing to listen and fairly consider other people's views and are open to possible persuasion.

As for seeking consensus, by all means, that can be a very good thing. In fact, most of the time the truth is probably a combination of different points of view rather than only one or the other.

However, I think we also have to admit to ourselves that sometimes, differences of opinion are fundamental and must be debated, with consensus as an improbable outcome. Debate needn't be "forensic" in style, nor should it be obnoxiously gauche. JMHO.

The most serious problem in American politics today is that people with wrong ideas are uncompromising, and people with good ideas are submissive and unwilling to fight. Change that, and we might have a real democracy again.

but activism is the key to progress.

Snowden did not debate the leaders of the US.  He acted, knowing that this was his best chance to affect the conversation.

The diaries I will rec these days are those which talk about ways kossacks have interacted with the public.
