  •  Things will change as time goes on. (30+ / 0-)

The people with the mindset of your former friend, by and large, had the opportunity to build their lives during a time of relative economic prosperity. People who are trying to get by now will carry the experience of terrible economic times with them for the rest of their lives.

I used to hear stories about people who lived through the Depression and were quite frugal through the rest of their lives. They were also the people who supported the creation of the social safety net. As they grew older and died off the current generation has taken their place, but without the experience of real economic hardship, they don't see the same need for a social support structure.

As time goes on, those who are struggling now will take the place of people who have had the benefit of stable economic times, and the voters' attitudes towards the social safety net will swing back to the left.

    •  The boomers think the world revolves around them (7+ / 0-)

because, for their entire lives, it has.

They're the bulge in the demographics curve. They have driven pretty much everything for the last 60+ yrs.

And at this point, they're trying to come to grips with their mortality, and the fact that they're OLD for the most part, and they're really pissed off about that.

In a lot of cases, the people they depend on are younger than they are. Doctors, lawyers, accountants - most of them are going to be younger than the boomers, or if they aren't, they're getting ready to retire.

This is really what drives a lot of it - they're getting older, they can't ignore it anymore, and they're really mad. About everything.

Not all of them, of course. I'm not particularly mad about getting older. At this age I've lived longer than my mom, my paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, and half my uncles (people die young on my mother's side)

I'm perfectly healthy (knock wood) but I'm still amazed at every birthday, and I can't wait to see what the future brings.
